A glorious limited edition, full colour, soft back, 45 page A5 photo book celebrating the Opening Ceremony for the Nat West Island games XIV in 2011.
In June 2011, The Isle of Wight played host to the NatWest International Island Games. A massive gathering of 3,400 athletes from 25 islands around the world, competing in 14 different sports.
Living up to it’s reputation as the Carnival Island, Isle of Wight chose to give the athletes the warmest, most colourful and memorable welcome the Games had ever seen by devising an opening ceremony second to none. An Extraordinary Island tells our story – a celebration of an island and its people through costume, music and dance. From the Jurassic period through to modern day Festival, the tale weaves its way imaginatively through Island history, custom and folklore, bringing colour and spectacle to the streets.
A year in the making, this was the most ambitious and expansive arts=in-education project ever undertaken on the Island. 1500 young people and adults from 60 local schools and community organisations took part. They researched, designed, made and performed their own costumes working with teachers, parents, local and visiting artists and the Island’s flagship Carnival Learning Centre.
The pictures in this book speak for themselves, they capture the enthusiasm, the passion and the energy of that day, when the sun shone down on the Isle of Wight and the world was looking on…
